How Frank Lampard Chat Helped Seal Luiz’s Chelsea To Arsenal Move

Arsenal defender David Luiz revealed how a chat with Chelsea manager Frank Lampard helped seal his transfer away from Stamford Bridge.

Arsenal produced one of the more surprising deals on transfer deadline day, after they secured the services of David Luiz from Chelsea for £8million.

Gunners boss Unai Emery had made it a priory to strengthen his defence during the window after he had seen his side finish fifth in the Premier League last season and concede 51 goals in the process.

There was also a heightened sense of urgency to bring in another centre-back following a breakdown in talks with Laurent Koscielny over a new deal, which in turn saw the 33-year-old look to manoeuvre a move away from the north London club.

The former club captain was subsequently sold to Ligue 1 side Bordeaux for a reported fee of €5m (£4.6m), but that left Emery short of a centre-back.

But fortunately for the Spaniard, Luiz was looking for a “new challenge”.

The 32-year-old defender revealed he had a “real honest conversation” with Lampard after the Blues legend took over at the club, and admitted the pair had “different ideas” for the upcoming season.

Lampard told the Brazilian he would not be guaranteed a regular starting role in his team and despite having won six pieces of silverware during his two spells at the club, he was willing to allow Luiz to make the move across the capital.

“I could choose a comfortable zone, get money, be cool and that is it. But I like a new challenge and new things in my life,” Luiz told the ESPN Brasil.
